Foreign Exchange Students

FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT APPROVAL PROCESS

 

USD 368 welcomes the opportunity for foreign exchange students to study at the high school level and experience the culture of schools and community. The district limits the number of exchange students to two (2) per school year.      

 

Foreign Exchange Student(s) must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be associated with an exchange program approved by the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel (CSIET); Approved List

  • Must be assigned to host family with established residency inside USD 368 boundaries;

  • Grade level must be equivalent to a junior or senior as determined by school personnel using records/documentation;

  • Must be fluent in English;

  • Must be enrolled as a full time “in-person” student;

  • Must follow all KSHSAA and school policies in order to participate in activities/athletics; 

  • Must make plans to attend school the entire academic year (August through May).

 

Timeline

  • Applications will be received Jan.1st  through April 15th for a placement during the following school year.

  • PHS Administration will review the applications and notify the host families that are selected to host the approved student(s) by the first Friday in May.

  • Enrollment must be completed prior to the first day of school.

 

Graduation Ceremony

  • Foreign exchange students may choose to participate in the PHS Graduation Ceremony but they will not receive an official diploma.  

  • Foreign exchange students are responsible for purchasing the required cap/gown.

 

Disclaimers

  • It is the responsibility of the student and the cooperating agency to verify that credits earned at Paola High School will transfer back to their home school.

  • Foreign exchange students are classified as a “Junior” while at PHS.

  • Students may not be able to be placed in their preferred list of courses based on availability.

  • Students seeking to participate in activities/sports will need to earn a spot through the same tryout process as all Paola High School students.

  • Acceptance is provided to the Host Family AND Foreign Exchange student specified on the application received.  If either the host family or the Foreign Exchange student changes a new application and acceptance may be necessary.
